Treasure Pouch

"There is a 50% chance of rain at 11:00, but after that, the weather looks pretty good. Should we still go?"
I tilted my head towards the sky, noticing a ray of sunshine peaking through the cloudy gray.
"You bet!" I replied. And the adventure began.

Plugging in the ipod to the radio of the car, we turned the volume up loud so we could hear the music above the whirring of the wind as it danced through all the open windows. We cruised down the curvy country road surrounded by lush lime green spring foliage, singing loudly and breathing in the fresh air. Today, we were going on an adventure.

We knew where we were going...sort of. With hiking shoes tied and backpacks loaded with PBJs, we five college girls were ready to climb Sugarloaf mountain - we just needed to find out how to get there. We could see it from the highway, so we began searching for a road that would take us to the trailhead. After several wrong guesses, slight detours, and a phone call or two, we finally arrived at the base of the mountain with happy hearts and ready feet. The beautiful hike led us straight to the base of a huge rock face with a crack straight up the middle. Jumping at the chance for adventure, we crawled on our hands and knees through narrow crevices up to the peak, where we ate a celebratory lunch as we marveled at the expanse below us. A patchwork of rolling hills, tree tops of various shades of green, and a snaking river spread out before our eyes.

After trekking back down the mountain (and creating a "human avalanche"...but that's a different story), we began the next leg of our adventuresome journey - cliff jumping. This time, we exhanged the hiking boots for flip flops and a swim suit. Gathering courage, we approached the first cliff and peered over the edge, where the deep water dared us to jump into it. Taking a deep breath and a running leap, we embraced the adrenaline rush as we free fell through the air for what seemed like forever before splashing into the shockingly cold water below. The coldness of the water and the height of the jump were so breathtaking, nerve-wracking, and almost terrifying...that we just had to do it again! After a few more jumps, we decided that our shivering knees and blue lips needed a warm-up. It was time for a campfire.

Upon returning to the place where we left our firewood, we discovered a group of people sitting around our fire pit by a roaring fire. Not only had they taken our spot, but they were using our firewood that we had worked so hard to gather and break into manageable pieces! Joking amongst ourselves, we politely gathered a new batch of firewood and started a new campfire next door. (Might I add that we only used two matches, and no help from a man!) We roasted hot dogs and smores, took pictures, laughed together, and relaxed on blankets while the sun set.

As soon as we headed down the highway back to campus after a long day of exciting adventures, tiny rain drops began to splatter on the window. The rain had waited all day long for us to finish our endevour. Once we were safe and sound, it arrived with perfect timing.

With every adventure we experienced today, I kept thinking about a verse I read just this morning.

"You are safe in the care of the Lord your God, secure in His treasure pouch." (1 Samuel 25:29 NLT)

With every adventure, every step of the mountain climb, and every jump off of towering heights, we are secure in His treasure pouch. When we don't exactly know where we are going or where to turn, we are in good hands. There may be a few stormy clouds and obstacles along the way, but we are safe in the care of the Lord.

Sometimes I believe that every day is an adventure in the kingdom of God. But no matter what mountain you climb, what leaps you take, what roads you travel, what detours you take, or what rain clouds you see, you are secure in His treasure pouch.
