More to Come
$100 down. $4400 to go. I debated whether or not I should embark on this trip to Tanzania, Africa, but when I put down that $100 deposit, it was a done deal. $100 is not really very much in the grand scheme of things, but it does signify that I am committing to the trip. It seals the promise that more money will be collected later. That's what a deposit does. It confirms that there is more to come.
I like the Bible's definition of a deposit: something that "guarantees what is to come." A deposit is just a small portion of a grand total. A deposit says, "There's more to come."
When the Bible talks about this deposit, it is actually speaking about the Holy Spirit. 2 Corinthians 1:22 says that God "put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come."
Isn't it amazing that God has a spirit? I believe that I have a spirit and you have a spirit - it's that innermost part of you that no one else can really understand or explain. Your spirit is what makes you you; it is you at your core. And God has a spirit, too, only He shares that spirit with us. His gives believers the gift of His Holy Spirit to connect our hearts with His. The Holy Spirit is not like the string that connects the kite to the kid. No, the Holy Spirit is like a tight rubber band that binds your heart right up next to God's heart.
Whenever you have had an experience or an encounter with God, you have experienced the Holy Spirit. When you communicate with Him, hear Him speak, or feel His heart beat, you are experiencing the Holy Spirit. Even if your heart is just barely pricked by God's love, that's the Spirit.
But what I find most fascinating of all is that this sweet Spirit, this powerful presence, this close connection that we have with God through the Holy Spirit...that is just the deposit! That's the $100 out of $4500! If we can be so intimately connected with God through the Holy Spirit now, how much more will we experience God's presence when the full amount comes in?! If this unbelieveable gift is just the deposit, can you imagine the extent of what is to come?!
Oh, what joy we have to look forward to when our inheritance is complete!
