That's No Secret

"You never stop smiling, do you?"

The lift attendant said to our family as we scooted forward to get on the ski lift.

One of the great things about skiing at Wolf Creek is that it is a small mountain. That means low crowds and short lift lines. That also means you can make buddies with the lift attendants because you see them over and over and over again.

We had remembered this lift attendant man in particular from the year before and were extra friendly to him, not really knowing if he remembered us. However, we must have been somewhat memorable because one day he said to us, "You never stop smiling, do you?"

Before we had time to answer, the lift scooped us up and took us away. But my mom was ready when we got down to the bottom of the mountain and saw him the next time.

She said something like, "You didn't ask why we are so happy."

Naturally, he responded, "Well, why?"

As the lift picked us up again, she barely had time to turn around and say, "It's a secret!"

Because of the nature of ski lifts, our conversations with the lift man had to come in short increments.

The next time around, he motioned us forward to assist us onto the lift and said, "You never told me that secret."

With a huge smile, my mom shouted, "It's Jesus!"

A woman lift assistant, who had been standing silent through our whole conversation over the past few lift trips, suddenly perked up. "That's no secret!" And with that, the lift swept us up and away.

It's no secret that Jesus is the reason for our endless joy. It's no secret that He is the one who fills our lives with purpose, meaning, and hope. It's no secret that His love blows us away and is extended to all who will accept it.

We should be shouting it from the mountaintops, but sometimes we act like it's a secret that we're Jesus-followers and Christ is the reason and motivation for every breath we take. Does the world look upon us and notice our exceeding joy...or do they hear just our complaints and see our anxieties and realize that we are no different from the rest of the normal world?

Often I fall into thinking that sharing Christ with the world around us takes a lot of courage, bravery, boldness, and preparation. I suppose that sometimes that may be the case. But really, all you need to have is a love for Jesus that saturates your life...and then complete honesty. Those two things combined will have people asking you why you are so joyful, so loving, and so hopeful all the time. Then you can honestly turn to them and answer, "It's Jesus." It's no secret after all.
