Barefoot

Jesus must have loved feet. He healed many pairs of feet so that they could walk, leap, and dance again. Hundreds of dirty feet came to Him, falling at His feet to listen to Him speak or to beg for His healing. He send out seventy-two pairs of feet to minister in His name. He loved the woman who washed His feet with her tears, and He honored the woman who annointed his feet with her alabaster jar of perfume. To show His disciples the full extent of His love, he washed their feet. It was His own feet that were pierced for our transgressions. After the resurrection, He showed His disciples his hands and feet so that they would believe. He even sends our feet on the ultimate mission to show people the way to Him. How beautiful are the feet that spread the good news! Yes, Jesus must have loved feet.

Yesterday I left my shoes in the closet and walked barefoot all day in honor of Tom's "One Day Without Shoes." This cause was initiated to raise awareness about people in poverty-stricken places who do not have shoes at all. At first, it was very enjoyable to feel the different textures beneath my feet - concrete sidewalks, smooth dirt, grassy fields, brick, tile, and carpet. But after the first hour of walking from place to place with unprotected soles, my feet began to hurt. As a result, the pain in every step became a constant reminder of why I chose to take off my shoes in the first place.

I ended up spending a lot of time thinking about feet. I thought about the disciples' dusty feet as they followed Jesus wherever He went. I thought about Jesus' feet and all the places they took Him. I thought about His precious feet being pierced and then resurrected. I thought about the millions of people around the world whose bare feet are known and loved by the Lord. I even thought about my own feet, so tender and protected compared to the feet of most. I pray that someday my feet will be able to walk to places where Jesus' name is dying to be heard, places where barefooted souls need to find salvation at the feet of Jesus.

Yes, Jesus must have loved feet. He loves your feet. He lifted you out of the muck, set your feet on a rock, and gave you a firm place to stand. (Psalm 40:2) He wants to make your "feet like the feet of a deer" so that you can "stand on the heights." (Psalm 18:33) He delivers your feet from stumbling, so that you can walk before Him in the light of life. (Psalm 56:13) May your feet follow close behind His, and may they take you to places where you can make His name known. Sometimes, the people you meet may literally have bare feet, but other times they may wear high heels, loafers, or flip flops just like you. Whatever they wear, their feet are known and loved by the Lord, and their hearts are thirsty to meet Jesus. Let's fall in step with the feet of Jesus, even if it means getting a little dirt on our feet or taking off our shoes entirely. Let's love and wash feet like Jesus did. Someday we will all fall before the feet that were pierced for us, and we will worship the one who deserves it all.
